Wissenswert

EPS is Encapsulated PostScript: a PostScript program describing one piece of artwork, with a bounding box. It predates SVG by a decade and survives because RIPs, screen-printing shops and older sign software were built around it and never had a reason to move.

What EPS gives you over a PNG is the same thing SVG does — real outlines that scale and separate. What it gives you over SVG is that the shop on the other end of the email will open it without asking questions.

An EPS with a bitmap inside it is still a bitmap. If a printer rejected your last file for being "not real vector", that is usually what happened: a converter wrapped the raster rather than tracing it.

3 Schritte
  1. Drop the PNG

Drop the mark. Flat artwork traces best; keep the palette small if it is going to screen print.

  2. Trace to flat fills

One fill per colour, low node count. Screen printing wants few colours because each one is a screen.

  3. Export EPS

Send it on, or open it in Illustrator or CorelDRAW first to assign spot colours.

Fragen

3 Fragen
01Why does my printer want EPS instead of SVG?
Because their RIP was built for PostScript and EPS is the format it has always taken. It is not a quality difference — the same outlines are in both — it is a workflow that works and has not needed changing.
02Is an EPS with an image inside it still vector?
No, and that is the usual reason a print shop rejects a file. EPS can embed a bitmap; the result has a vector wrapper and raster contents, and it prints exactly as badly as the bitmap did.
03What about spot colours?
The trace produces flat process fills. Assigning spot colours is a job for your editor once the paths exist, because which spot library applies depends on the shop.
