Convert JPG to EPS

Print shops ask for EPS; clients send JPGs. Trace the JPG into outlines here and export EPS that a RIP reads as artwork rather than a photograph.

Goed om te weten

The order matters: filter, then trace, then export. A JPG has ringing along every hard edge, and an EPS of a rippling contour is a rippling contour at press resolution — the plate does not forgive it the way a screen does.

Screen printing puts a hard ceiling on colour count, because each colour is a separate screen. Trace with the palette set to what the shop quoted rather than to what looks closest, and merge the rest by hand.

If the JPG is a photograph, EPS will not make it printable as line art. It will make it a posterised stylisation with as many flat fills as you asked for — sometimes exactly what you want for a shirt, never a substitute for the original vector.

Hoe het werkt

3 stappen
  1. Drop the JPG

Drop the artwork the client sent. It stays in this tab.

  2. Filter, then set the palette

Raise the speckle filter to clear JPEG ringing, then set the colour count to the number of screens.

  3. Export EPS

Open it once in an editor to confirm the paths are real before you send it to the shop.

Vragen

3 vragen
01My shop said my EPS was not vector. What happened?
Something embedded the JPG inside the EPS instead of tracing it. An EPS can contain a bitmap, and many one-click converters do exactly that. A traced file has paths, and you can confirm it by opening the EPS and clicking an edge.
02How many colours should I trace to for screen printing?
As many as the shop quoted screens for, and no more. Set the palette to that number before you look at the preview, so the trace makes the merge decisions rather than you doing it by hand afterwards.
03Does the file get uploaded?
No. The tracer is WebAssembly running in a Web Worker in this tab, so the pixels stay on your machine. There is no upload step, which is also why it keeps working with the network off.
